HL-Boom got its name from Luigi Auriemma, the person who wrote the advisory (available at http://aluigi.altervista.org/adv/hlboom-adv.txt). It affects all pre-Steam versions of Half-Life, which naturally gives the WON2 project problems. A Linux fix was quickly made available, but Windows servers (and to a lesser extent clients) have been out of luck until recently. I have a proxy DLL for wsock32.dll (if you don't know what it is, don't worry) on Windows which blocks it, and a few other things. Code is included. Just plop it in your HL directory and things should run smoothly. You can also, should other fixes be needed down the line, chain multiple wsock32 dlls together. Aluigi has released other advisories dealing with more complicated attacks that I can't really comment on. They share the same name, and can be easily found by searching his site . He has also provided some patches, which I trust enough to recommend if you find yourself under attack. Interest in attacking servers as a whole seems to have thankfully died off, meaning I probably won't update this DLL again unless something comes up or code magically falls on my lap. But that doesn't seem likely; aluigi's decided to move on. Download me (windows proxy dll 0.5). |
